| News from an AED project : Podere San Cristoforo by Lorenzo Zonin |
24-11-2009 |
 |
 | It's an estate with the high quality chateau concept: the vineyards are as close as possible to the winery.
Podere San Cristoforo stands in an isolated location in the countryside of an area lying between the sea
and gentle hillsides, characterized by the constant presence of breezes that blow in from the sea.
The soil is also of vital importance: it is made up of Aeolian deposits of medium texture, originating from the foliation of the mineral-bearing hills of Gavorrano, giving a stony terrain with a highish clay content. The Biodynamic project was started early in 2008. We farm vines using manures and herbal and mineral composts without requiring much chemicals on soil and plants. Biodynamic approach include the use of an astronomical calendar for the vineyard and cellar operations.
Some numbers.
Year of Foundation: 2000
Total Surface: 45 Hectares
Vineyard surface: 14 Hectares
Total production is 31.000 bottles/year) devided as following:
3.000 bott San Cristoforo (premier vin): blend of the best varietal production (no filtration).
20.000 bott Carandelle (deusième vin): 100% Sangiovese (no filtration).
6.000 bott Amaranto 100% Sangiovese (no filtration).
2.000 bott Luminoso from an old vineyard mostly planted with Vermentino
Owner and winemaker: Lorenzo Zonin
Vineyard manager: Davide Elisei
Packaging notes: the labels were produced starting from artisanal printing, using engraved copper plates. Besides, MemoWine is a new type of back label that allows the wine-lover to easily save and collect part of the label by removing the glue-free section. MemoWine makes Podere San Cristoforo wine unforgettable.
Recently we I had an "outstanding" review by Robert Parker, and I'm really happy
to share that with all the AED members. I'm looking for good importers and distributors all over
the world, if you hear something please let me know. All the best, Lorenzo.
*** From The Wine Advocate # 184 Aug 2009 ***
2007 Podere San Cristoforo - “Carandelle “ - 90 points
The 2007 Sangiovese Carandelle is a super-ripe, sexy wine laced with perfumed red fruits, sweet spices, tobacco and flowers, all of which are woven together in a luxuriously elegant fabric. Medium in body, it possesses outstanding persistence and balance in an utterly irresistible style, with the extra dimension of volume that is typical of the wines of Maremma. Sweet, candied notes linger on the finish. Ideally the wine should be opened 15-30 minutes prior to serving.
2007 Podere San Cristoforo - “San Cristoforo” - 91 points
The 2007 San Cristoforo (Syrah, Petit Verdot) flows from the glass with superb clarity and precision. Black cherries, earthiness, grilled herbs, licorice and leather all make an appearance as this full-bodied, beautifully-crafted red flows from the glass. The balance and depth here are simply impeccable. This is first-class juice.
